-------

The practice of creating dreamcatchers, also known as dream snares, started within the Ojibwe (Anishinaabe) culture.

Purpose:

They were originally intended as protective talismans for infants, especially children.

Materials:

A woven net or web on a willow hoop, often decorated with feathers and beads, is the traditional construction.

Symbolism:

The circular shape represents the cycle of life and the journey of the sun and moon, according to Harpo Paris, who describes it as a metaphor for the journey of the sun and moon across the sky.

Pan-Indian Movement:

Dreamcatchers became more widely used across Native American communities and beyond during the Pan-Indian Movement of the 1960s and 1970s.

Modern Usage:

While still held in high regard within Native American communities, dreamcatchers are now also commonly used as decorative and symbolic items in non-Native settings.
